I believe all Christians should vote based on all moral issues facing us in our day including poverty. Ridding poverty is very close to the heart of God. I love to see Christians running and obtaining public office. I worked in the Governors Office of Technology as a branch manager in the state of Kentucky and know first hand that government is a mission field.
I do not believe that legislating morality is the answer. History has proven that it has not been successful. Morality is a heart issue. The only thing that can change the heart is God. The "Christian Right" would better serve humanity by lifting up the cross of Christ in their cities, loving the people there in and addressing the moral issue of poverty. If the Christian Right would have that shift in focus, morals would improve without causing such a divide.
And we must continually ask our self the question "what would Christ do?" We only have the Gospels to base our answer on. In the Gospels, Jesus refused to get caught up in the political divide of his day, nor did he spend time in trying to influence the legislation of morality. His life really speaks to us today. He was in a political hot spot. The Romans were in control of government and the "religious right" (Pharisaical Jews) were looking for someone to rally for their political agenda. When Jesus refused to do so and set His Kingdom rule up immediately, the religious right rejected Him.
With that said, Jesus is my example and not the Christian Right. I choose to follow Jesus even though it is an unpopular walk in our day. Jesus is my example (1 Peter 2:21) and I must keep my eyes on Him (Hebrews 12:2).
Know that you are loved,
